IFWH presentation wins two prizes
Enormous congratulations to David Barrett for his excellent research presentation at the Institute for Women’s Health conference at UCL. David is in the second year of his PhD at the Institute of Bioengineering, QMUL and is investigating the underlying mechanisms that could lead to rupture of the fetal membranes and preterm birth.
The presentation discussed new ideas about why the fetal membranes are unable to heal spontaneously and possible changes to the fetal membrane matrix tissue and mechanical properties. David is funded by the RoseTrees Trust and this research is currently under review by the journal Prenatal Diagnosis.
David also won third prize for his “honeycomb” image at the UK Grad Festival which showcased the best in science.
Currently, we are developing methods in regenerative medicine to repair the fetal membranes and also exploring the mechanisms that could restore normal tissue biomechanics and physiology. This work involves a number of clinicans including Prof Anna David (UCL/UCLH), Prof Jan Deprest (Belgium) and scientists Dr Alvaro Mata (QMUL), Prof David Becker (UCL). Our research is supported by funding by the RoseTrees Trust and Wellcome Trust (ISSF).
