An app which brings cells to life

Imagine a cell that literally jumps off a page. Well hold that thought because now you can actually do this for real at home with your children. ColAR mix is an exciting app that models a 2D colored drawing into a 3D animation. The experience is fantastic since the app makes the drawing come to life and allows you for example, to take a walk inside a cell.

Cells in 3D with ColAR app. My five year old colored the cell and used ColAR app to bring the cell to life. How cool is this?

All we did was print pictures from the ColAR mix website, colored them in and then used my android device to take an image. Within a second, the 2D image comes to life and as long as the camera points at the picture, you can watch the cell float above the page. The animated drawings are exactly the same colors and designs you created in the 2D drawing so in our case, we had red mitochondria and green ribosomes.

No matter where I moved my device, I was able to zoom in and out of the cell and take a walk around. My five year old watched liposomes floating around mitochondria that were encased by the plasma membrane and a bulging nucleus that was surrounded by banana shaped endoplasmic reticulum and the golgi apparatus.

ColAR mix has plenty of colored pictures of animals, shoes, teddy bears on there website but sadly, this is the only drawing of the cell. The library of scientific drawings is very limited but things could change over time.
